The trout diet is mainly composed of all a series of invertebrates that the fish find in its habitat. As a rule, these small insects are representeded by several species of Ephemera, of Trichopter, of Chironomid and, in some case, where the water is really clean, of plecopter. To these bugs sometimes joint other small animals, such as fries – which are very appreciate from the salmonidis of the greater dimensions – leech, worms and crustaceans. The shrimps, in particular, can constitute a not so sporadic meal for the trout that live in rivers rich of aquatic plants: places where all the invertebrates that follow a vegetarian feeding can develop in consisting way.
The shrimps generally preyed by salmonids are the gammarus, which are very diffuse in a lot of rivers and lakes and that are frequently attacked by the trout in those periods in which up-wings and sedge hatch scarcely, spending a large part of their time on the river bottom, repairing themselves between the submerged vegetation and stones. Anyway, the gammarus are not the only crustaceans that can end in the stomach of the trout. In some water courses, or lakes, it prospers the classic fresh water shrimp, similar in the aspect to that one we can find in the sea, which is a real delicacy for many fish; from here, proposing a valid imitation of it to these “finny” predators, it is possible to induce them to take our fly, also in those moments in which we do not note any insects hatching and we suppose the fish prefer to rest themselves between the aquatic vegetation or in a deep pool.
The selection of flies which want to imitate a real shrimp is quite modest on the market and such artificials are mostly destined for catching salmon, sea trout or bonefish. These lures, however, realised on a hook of appropriated size, are effective for alluring brown trout, rainbows and black bass as well. In this case, their specific use is as deep fishing flies and therefore they are very appropriate for inspecting the bottom of some good pool, even in the colder periods of the year, when the fish stay quite often at the lower level of the river or of the lake.
An effective exponent of this category of imitations is my Gamberetto Tuttofare, a fly that I conceived processing the dressing of some bonefis lures, characterised by their eyes composed with two balls of a metallic chain. My artificial – which is classifiable in the group of the streamers or nymphs – is born for being used wherever it is necessary a very heavy bait and for tempting those fish which are able to distinguish the trick hidden in most common leaded flies of stimulating type, such as the Gold Head: practically, a streamer useful for fishing at the beginning of the season, although always valid, also in the hearth of summer, for inducing to take a good trout that acts in a lazy and suspicious way, or for tempting a sea trout that is feeding along the coast. The Gamberetto Tuttofare is useful also for turbot fly fishing: some friends have caught this kind of fish on several occasions using a large pattern of fly presented close to the bottom of pool near the banks.

INSTRUCTIONS

We start the realisation of our shrimp, clamping into the vice jay the hook and applying on it the black thread, which we use then for tying on the bend some fibres of pearly Crystalhair and a small tuft of white Arctic fox’s hair. The fox’s hairs must extend backwards for nearly the same length of hook shank, while the Crystalhair must be a little longer than this

On the fixing point of the antennas, we bind in two little balls of a metallic chain and we stop them in position with crossed turns of thread

Just behind the eyes, we tie in a piece of small copper wire; after that, we wax a short section of the thread and we distribute on it a small quantity of cream yellow dyed polypropylene

We compact the dubbing rope and we wrap it along nearly all the hook shank, passing it also around the eyes, so to create the fly body

At short distance from the hook eye, we bind in a small strip of transparent plastic sheet, which we have cut first with a lance tip shape: the strip must be laid so that its apical portion is between the eyes

Wrapping in wide turns the copper wire along the body, we form the ribbing, ribbing that will have also the task to hold in position the plastic strip over the shrimp back

With some turns of black thread behind the hook eye, we build the head and then we whip finish it
